English as a Second Language (ESL)

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed to serve the needs of English learners, age 9 yrs and up. The program covers  three key areas of the English language: Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading and Vocabulary. Classes are offered online, live, and pre-recorded by professional English teachers. Activities for the ESL programs comprise quizzes, tests, exercises, puzzles, random-sentence generator,  audio sentence player,  and other computer assisted language learning activities.

  • Listening Comprehension measures the ability to understand spoken English as it is used in colleges and universities.
  • Structure and Written Expression measures recognition of selected structural and grammatical points in standard written English.
  • Reading Comprehension measures the ability to read and understand academic reading material written in English.
  • Speaking Comprehension measures the ability to speak English.  Students are presented with different scenarios and asked to  record constructed responses to questions.

The ESL program is divided into two modules:

ESL Starter  (Age 9+) Students enrolled in this module are introduced to basic and intermediate ESL. Students learn basic to mid-level ESL reading, listening,  speaking, and language form and meaning.

ESL Advanced (Age 9+) This is an advanced ESL module that requires, as prerequisite, the completion of the ESL Starter module or an intermediate to advanced-level of  English understanding, reading, and writing knowledge. Students enrolled in this module learn  structure and written expression, listening comprehension, and reading and vocabulary.  Furthermore, each student in the ESL advanced module is paired with a native English conversation partner, 4 hours/week, to practice and develop his/her English speaking skills. The English native speaker engages the student on various conversational topics and provides feedback on how the student can better improve his/her speaking ability. (The practice sessions are conducted through videoconferencing technologies, and are recorded for training purposes
